NatuRose Growth and Survival Rates

Animal Nutrition customers:

Cyanotech’s NatuRose® Natural Astaxanthin is being used in many different species for its pigmentation as well as its health benefits. Besides providing pigment for fish, shrimp and poultry (egg yolks), NatuRose is being used in tropical fish feeds, bird feeds, and pet foods as well. Due to its ability to enhance immunity, NatuRose provides for increased survival and growth rates in certain species when compared with synthetic astaxanthin. Also, NatuRose provides a more even, natural pigmentation when compared to synthetic astaxanthin in some species.

Human Nutrition customers:

Astaxanthin is proving to have outstanding benefits for the skin when taken internally or when applied topically. Some researchers in Japan have been studying skin applications for Astaxanthin. One published study on hairless mice demonstrated that topically applied Astaxanthin decreased wrinkling of the skin after exposure to UVB radiation. Arakane (2001) Another interesting study was done on humans in Japan. This double blind, placebo controlled study was done with an oral dose of 2 mg per day of Astaxanthin for four weeks along with tocotrienols. After only 2 weeks, measurable improvements were seen in fine wrinkles, tone, elasticity, moisture levels, smoothness and spots and freckles in the experimental group, while the placebo group’s skin condition showed no signs of improvement. Yamashita (2002)

These results are particularly interesting coupled with a previous clinical study showing that Astaxanthin works as an internal sunscreen. (Cyanotech holds a patent for the use of Astaxanthin as an internal and/or topical sunscreen, US Patent #6,433,025.)
